Overview

Velvet Emporium was a new Nairobi boutique that needed to launch from zero — brand identity, storefront, and the internal workflows behind the business.

I built the full digital foundation myself: the visual direction, customer-facing shopping experience, product and content workflows, and the admin system the team could use to manage the store after launch.

Problem

A new boutique has to earn trust quickly. The brand needed to feel considered from the first touchpoint, the storefront needed to make products easy to browse and buy, and the admin needed to be practical enough for a small team managing real stock, product changes, and incoming orders.

The risk was launching with a polished surface but no operating system underneath — a store that looked ready, but became difficult to run once products and orders started moving.

Approach

I treated the brand, storefront, and admin as one system. The brand design gave the boutique a clear visual identity, the storefront translated that identity into a shopping experience, and the admin gave the team a way to manage products, inventory, orders, and content without touching code.

Under the hood, commerce data lives in D1 and is managed through a Hono API on Cloudflare Workers. Sanity handles editorial content and imagery, while Clerk protects admin access. That keeps the business flexible: the team can update the store independently, and the technical foundation can grow with the boutique.
